Money missing from the accounts. A document that looks a little too genuine. A senior manager behaving strangely, or a competitor who knows things only an insider could know. Israel Background investigates fraud, embezzlement and forgery inside businesses and companies operating in Israel, discreetly and without exposing the investigation before you are ready. At the end you receive a documented factual file your counsel can use: in a civil claim, a police complaint, a disciplinary process, or a negotiation to recover the money.
Who we work for
- Foreign parent companies with an Israeli subsidiary, branch or R&D center where something is not adding up.
- Investors and funds who suspect the management of an Israeli portfolio company is acting behind their back.
- Boards, audit committees and compliance teams that need an independent factual inquiry.
- Law firms in Israel and abroad running a fraud or embezzlement matter that needs evidence on the ground.
- Business owners and partners who suspect theft, fraud or a breach of trust from inside.
What we investigate
Embezzlement and employee theft
An employee who diverts funds to themselves or to a fictitious supplier, inflates expenses, steals stock, or sells inventory "on the side". We establish the scope, the method and the people involved, and document it so you can act: demand repayment, file a claim or make a complaint.
Breach of trust at senior level
A manager or partner who steers deals to companies linked to them, takes business opportunities for themselves, or strips the company. These cases require mapping the links between people and companies, not only reviewing transactions.
Undercover investigators inside the organization
When the problem cannot be understood from the outside, an experienced investigator joins the organization as an employee and learns from within how the theft or fraud is carried out and who is involved. This is the right tool when several employees may be acting together, when goods are disappearing from a warehouse or production line, or when information is leaking. The placement is planned with management and carried out within the law.
Document and signature forgery
A contract, power of attorney, will, invoice or approval that looks genuine, but something does not fit. We investigate the circumstances: where the document came from, who was involved, what happened around the signing, and what the witnesses say. Where a professional examination of the handwriting or the document itself is needed, we work alongside a forensic document examiner.
Corporate espionage and trade secret theft
An employee who left for a competitor with the client list, information that leaked before a tender, or a competitor receiving inside information. We establish what leaked, how and to whom, and build the factual groundwork for legal action.
Third-party fraud
A supplier billing for goods never delivered, a customer who made false representations, or an "investor" who disappeared with the money. We look at who is really behind the counterparty, their track record, and where the money went. Where needed, the investigation continues into asset tracing.
Money laundering red flags
Transactions that do not match the declared business, company structures with no real activity, or funds passing through parties with no economic reason. We help companies and counsel establish the facts before entering a deal or before reporting.
Warning signs not to ignore
- A persistent gap between stock and sales, or between revenue and activity.
- A new supplier nobody knows, with an address or bank account linked to an employee.
- An employee who never takes leave and will not let anyone cover their role.
- A lifestyle that does not match the salary.
- Documents that go missing, or originals replaced by copies.
- A competitor who reaches your clients at exactly the right moment.
If any of these sound familiar, find out the facts before you confront anyone. Early confrontation is the fastest way to make evidence disappear.
What a licensed investigator may and may not do
An investigation carried out unlawfully hurts the client first: the evidence is excluded and the suspect gains a defense. Every investigation we run stays within Israeli law.
A licensed private investigator in Israel may:
- Research open sources and public registries.
- Conduct lawful observation and field work.
- Join an organization as an employee, in coordination with management, and record conversations they are a party to.
- Interview witnesses and take statements from people willing to give them.
- Analyze documents and data the client lawfully holds.
A licensed private investigator may not:
- Listen to conversations they are not a party to, or install listening devices.
- Break into employees' computers, phones, mailboxes or accounts.
- Obtain information from banks or closed databases.
- Impersonate an official.
On monitoring inside the workplace: employee monitoring, cameras and reviewing company computers are subject to Israeli privacy and employment law, which may differ from the rules in your home jurisdiction. Before any such step we recommend legal advice, and we coordinate the approach with the company's counsel.
How the engagement works
- 01Confidential first call
We learn what happened, what is known, who knows about the suspicion, and what the goal is: recovering money, stopping a leak, legal proceedings or an internal inquiry.
- 02Investigation plan and budget
We agree in advance on what will be examined, with which tools, and what it will cost. No surprises.
- 03Collection and research
Open sources, analysis of documents and data, and mapping of the links between people, companies and money.
- 04Undercover and field work, where needed
Observation, an investigator placed inside the organization, and meetings designed to verify what the research shows.
- 05Factual report
Documented findings, timelines, a link chart and an assessment of the loss. No speculation and no opinion. Delivered in English.
- 06Support for next steps
Work with your Israeli and foreign counsel on the claim, the complaint or the negotiation, and testimony in court if required.
What you receive

- An assessment of the loss, as far as the findings allow.
- A timeline and link chart of people, companies and money.

Frequently asked questions
We suspect fraud at our Israeli subsidiary. Where do we start?
Do not confront anyone, and keep the circle of people who know about the suspicion small. Early confrontation gives the suspect time to destroy evidence and align stories. The first step is a confidential call with an investigator and with counsel, to plan how to establish the facts quietly. We can work with your head office, your foreign counsel and your Israeli counsel at the same time.
What is an undercover placement, and is it legal in Israel?
An experienced investigator is hired into the organization as a regular employee, in coordination with management, and learns from within what is going on. It is legal when done within the law: the investigator may record conversations they are a party to, but may not listen to other people's conversations or access computers and phones.
How long does an embezzlement investigation take?
It depends on the scope. A focused inquiry into a specific suspicion can be completed quickly. An undercover placement, or embezzlement spanning several years, takes longer. In the first call we define the scope and tell you what to expect.
Can you determine whether a signature is forged?
A professional opinion on a signature or document is the role of a forensic document examiner, and we work alongside such experts. Our role is to investigate the circumstances: who was involved, what happened around the signing, and what the witnesses say. The circumstances are often what decides the case.
Can the stolen money be recovered?
Sometimes, yes. In many cases a strong factual file leads to a repayment settlement with the employee or the party involved, without lengthy proceedings. Where needed, the investigation continues into tracing the assets the money was moved into.
Do we need to file a police complaint?
That is a decision for you and your counsel. In some cases a complaint is the right step, in others a civil claim or a settlement is better. Our report supports any of these routes.
How much does it cost?
The fee is set according to the scope of the matter and agreed in advance, before any work begins. In the first call, at no cost, we tell you what can be checked and what it will cost.
